REVIEW: Harley Ingleby Moe – An Epic All Round Midlength?

Who’s It Aimed At?

The Harley Ingleby Moe covers a really broad range of abilities so if you’re mid level beginner and upwards this is one to check out!

For lower level surfers, there is plenty of paddle power and wave catching ability, with enough width under the chest to make them really forgiving and ideal for progressing your surfing.

For more advance surfers, it’ll make a super fun addition to the quiver and a great board for smaller, more grovelly conditions – whilst still have the performance for bigger stuff too!

Board Breakdown & Dimensions

harley ingleby moe midlength thunderbolt surfboard review 3Currently the Thunderbolt Moe mid length comes in 3 sizing options:

7’2 x 22 x 2 13/16 (49.4L)
7’4 x 22 ½ x 2 7/8  (52.9L)
8’0 x 22 5/8 x 3 1/16  (61.2L)

It’s also worth noting that the 8’0 version also has a longboard fin box as the centre fin too, making it a great choice for longboarders looking to drop down in size and keep the same feeling and flow.

The pretty flat rocker profile makes it super easy to paddle, yet there’s enough flick in the nose to allow it to handle a bit more punch as well.

Also, Harley and the Thunderbolt team have also announced the launch of the Moe Mini, dropping in January which then adds two new sizes to the Thunderbolt Moe range – a 6’6 and 6’10 model.

6’6 x 21 ½ x 2 5/8 (41L)
6’10 21 ½ x 2 ¾ (45L)

…and yes I’ll be grabbing one for a review when they land!

Thunderbolt Construction

Currently the Moe mid legnth come sin Thunderbolt Red, which is quickly becoming one of my favourite board constructions. Lightweight, super durable and really lively underfoot.

Along with the new Moe Mini, they’ll also be launching them both in Thunderbolt Black too – a high performance carbon build for even more performance.

Fin Setup

The Moe midlength comes in a 5 fin setup, allowing you to surfing is as a quad or thruster.

For me, it’s quad setup all day for the Moe – super fast and fun, easily allowing you to make sections, handle the flat spots and with plenty of control too, whilst still being surpringly manouverably.

Harley has a set of quad fins design for all his quads, so those would be my recommendation, as well as his nearly launched mid length quad fin set too, which will also be ideal.

For the 8’0 Moe, you do also havea. single fin box in the centre, so you can also set it up as longboard fin with sidebites too.

Currently all the Thunderbolt range is only available in FCS2 so if you’re a Futures fan like me, you’ll have to grab some new fins to go with it!

Ideal Wave Conditions

harley ingleby moe midlength thunderbolt surfboard review 2When it comes to the ideal wave conditions for the Harley Ingleby Moe it’s a really versatile board – handling everything from slow rolling thigh high and upwards.

Despite the well rounded outline of the board it can handle some size and punch too – so don’t be afraid to push it. For me head high at the points is where I’m starting to look at grabbing other boards, but honestly it’s a solid contender for that one board quiver setup – especially for intermediate surfers.

My buddy recently took his on a surf trip to Sri Lanka with me – where I also tested out the Skindog Ova – and it flew, handling smaller weaker days and the bigger punchier stuff with ease.

For most surfers, this boar will be a go to for 90% of days!

Moe V Mid 6

As another board from Harley Ingleby, I know people will be looking to compare the Moe with the incredibly popular Mid 6 – so what’s the difference?

Straight up, the Mid 6 is the higher performance of the two – espeically if you’re pushing it in terms of size and punchy hollow waves, the Mid 6 will easily win out.

For smaller, weaker surf I’d say the Moe has the edge though and for lower level surfers, the Moe is just way more fogiving and has that all round fun factor.

What’s It Like To Surf & Final Verdict

The Thudnerbolt Moe mid length certainly has the fun factor I’m always looking for in a surfboard.

It paddles incredibly well, generates a surprising amount of speed, but also turn super easy despite the length and volume it packs in.

Combine that with a really broad wave range and you have a winning combination – a truly verstaile mid length surfboard that pretty much anyone can grab and have fun on!

If you only have space for one board in your quiver (especially if you’re intermediate level) this is a solid choice – it’ll keep your wave count high and give you plenty of room for progression too.

Have your surfed the Thunderbolt Moe?

How did you get on with it?
